The Little Red Sled

A dearly-loved child sleds with her grandma every Saturday. During the week, she rides with her mother on errands, and they drive right by Grandma's house. Each day, the child sees someone sledding downhill on different objects--a cookie sheet, a trash can lid, a cardboard box, and other items. Could it be Grandma?

About Me

Hello! My name is Andrea (Syvrud) Crooks. I grew up in the beautiful hilly country surrounding Mandan/Bismarck, North Dakota, the third child in a family that included eight other siblings. We reveled in sledding, ice-skating, playing tennis, and in many neighborhood pick-up games of baseball. We were blessed with the solidity that comes from having no-nonsense parents from "The Greatest Generation" who expected us to behave and to do well in school.

School, especially the elementary level, was good for me. I thrived on the routine and loved reading. My favorite series was the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and when I ran out of those, I read every Nancy Drew mystery available at our local library.

After high school graduation, I got on a bus and traveled to Iowa to attend college. That is where I met my husband Ron, and I have been an Iowan ever since. It was natural for me to be a teacher, and I loved doing that. For thirty-five years, I taught secondary English, special education, and Spanish, and, occasionally, served as a long-term substitute. My husband and I were blessed with three very wonderful children, a daughter and two sons, who have given us 17 precious grandchildren.

In January of 2003, I decided that I would try publishing a children's book, and by late November of that year, The Little Red Sled was a reality. In 2004, I scribbled out another story, but when I was hired at a nearby high school, it was put away in a filing cabinet. About seven years later I retrieved the story and "tweaked" it again and again. It entailed quite a protracted effort, but finally, my newest book, Little Truck Without a Load has been published. It will be available after the Fourth of July holiday. Thank you God!
